Google can use Personal Intelligence data for ads if you opt in
Google updated privacy rules so opted-in Personal Intelligence context from Gmail, Photos, and Drive can also personalize advertising.
By Mark

Google quietly widened what Personal Intelligence can feed. If you already linked apps like Gmail, Photos, or Drive so Google’s AI can answer with your context, that same opted-in stream can now help personalize ads.
It is not “Google reads everything by default.” It is “if you turned the feature on for smarter answers, re-check what you allowed.”
What Personal Intelligence is
Personal Intelligence is Google’s name for letting AI features pull from accounts and apps you choose. The upside is obvious: answers that know your photos, files, or inbox without you re-explaining every time.
The downside is also obvious: richer context is valuable to advertising systems. Google’s updated privacy language makes that link explicit.
What changed for ads
Reporting from Android-focused outlets says data shared through Personal Intelligence — when you opt in — may be used to tailor ads. The connection is not forced on every Google account overnight. You enable the linking; you can disable it.
Still, a lot of people turn these switches on once during setup and never reopen the page. That is the group this update targets.
How to check your settings
Do this once today:
- Open your Google Account on the web or phone
- Go to Data & privacy
- Open personalization / Personal Intelligence related controls
- Unlink Gmail, Photos, Drive, or other apps you do not want feeding ads
- Review Search and ad personalization toggles while you are there
Turning a link off does not always delete older history sitting in Search or ad systems. Expect a lag, and clear activity controls if you want a harder reset.
Who should care
| You… | Action |
|---|---|
| Never enabled Personal Intelligence | Probably nothing urgent |
| Enabled it for smarter Gemini answers | Re-check linked apps today |
| Hate personalized ads | Unlink + tighten ad settings |
| Use a work Google account | Ask IT — org policies may override consumer toggles |
FAQ
Is this the same as AdSense on websites?
No. This is about your Google account’s personalization, not publisher AdSense tags on blogs.
Will unlinking break Gemini?
It can make answers less personal. Core search and chat still work; they just know less about your files and mail.
Does this affect YouTube recommendations?
YouTube has its own history and ad controls. Unlinking Personal Intelligence is one layer — check YouTube settings separately if that is your main concern.
Bottom line
Google is clearer now: opted-in Personal Intelligence is not only for helpful answers — it can also shape ads. If you flipped that switch for convenience, open Data & privacy and decide whether the trade still makes sense.
